GENERAL INFORMATION

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

Region 10 consists of five provinces: It is composed of the landlocked province of   Bukidnon in the South; Misamis Oriental in the North; the paradise island of Camiguin in the Northeast; Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental in the West; it comprises 9 cities namely: Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, El Salvador, Iligan,  Malaybalay, Valencia, Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub; 84 municipalities; 14 Congressional districts, and 2,022  barangays.

Bukidnon has vast agricultural resources which are highly suitable for almost all types of crops; it is the region’s food basket and primary supplier of raw material for processing in the various agri-industrial centers of the region. Misamis Oriental is the hub and industrial center of the region; is the home to the regional airport, international seaport, first class hotels and variety of agri-based & other manufacturing industries. The island of Camiguin is a place of unspoiled beauty, white sandy beaches, clear mountain springs and waterfalls and rustic old world charm. Misamis Occidental is a place of natural beauty, wetlands, unspoiled forests and rich, fertile soil; it is the base for most of the region’s aquaculture industries And lastly Lanao del Norte, the newest province added to the Northern Mindanao Region; it is traversed by several rivers, the most important of which is the Agus River which feeds the Ma. Cristina Falls, a major source of hydroelectric power for the Mindanao Grid.

 

 

CLIMATE AND TOPOGRAPHY

Three Climate types prevail in the different areas of Northern  Mindanao:

  Type II—No dry season with very pronounced maximum rainfall from November to January in the province of Camiguin and Misamis Occidental.

  Type III—Relatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year, affecting Misamis Oriental and Central Bukidnon.

  Type IV—Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year in Northeastern Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon.

CONTRIBUTION TO  GRDP

Northern Mindanao’s economy decreased from 7.1 percent in 2014 to 5.5 percent in 2015. The GRDP of Region X recorded Php 283 billion in 2015, showing an increase of Php 15 billion in the region’s economic output. However, such increase is lower than recorded in 2014. The declaration was due to slowdown in Industry and Services.

As shown in the graph, Agriculture & Forestry accounted for 86.9 percent while Fishing accounted for 13.1 percent of the total AHFF output of Region X in 2015. The region remained to have the biggest share of the total AHFF of Mindanao in 2015 with an increased share of 27.5 percent of the total AHFF in Mindanao.

For 2013, irrigated palay shows a productivity of 4.40 MT per hectare that is higher compared to 2012 of 4.25 MT per hectare, while rainfed palay registered a productivity of 3.32 MT per hectare which is also higher compared to 2012 of only 3.21 metric tons per hectare.

The above data shows that productivity of white corn decreased slightly from 1.88 MT/hectare in 2012 to 1.85 MT/hectare in 2013 and yellow corn productivity decreased from 4.72 MT/hectare in 2012 to 4.61 MT/hectare in 2013.

As shown in the above table, annual volume of production of livestock and poultry in the region increased. Hog production posted an increase of 4.35 percent; goat recorded an increase of 4.27 percent , carabao with 1.89 percent increase, cattle with 1.51 percent increase and chicken and duck production increased by 4.52 percent and . 4.78 percent, respectively.

 

As to the inventory by province, bukidnon has the most number of heads of livestock and poultry, followed by Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte and Camiguin.

Fish production (all sectors) in the region increased from a total of 153,644.20 MT in 2012 to a total of 156,277.52 MT in 2013 or about 1.71 percent. Commercial fishing shows a 1.12 percent increase in production; while Inland municipal fishing recorded an 8.42 percent increase and Marine municipal fishing shows a 1.20 percent increase.
