DA-10 backs bonsai-making initiative of Strike from Afar Battalion

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Agriculture – Region 10 (DA-10), through its Gender and Development (GAD) program, continues to strengthen partnerships for community development by supporting the bonsai-making seminar of the 4th Field Artillery (Strike from Afar) Battalion, Army Artillery Regiment, Philippine Army.

Held on July 16 at Camp Edilberto Evangelista, Patag, this city, the seminar is part of the Battalion’s broader initiative to foster creativity, mindfulness, and a deeper appreciation for nature among its personnel. By offering skills beyond military training, the program also aligns with the department’s mission of promoting holistic development and sustainable practices.

Resource speakers Hurly Vin G. Ganas and Karein O. Agor from the Research Center for Upland Development (RCUD) led the sessions on the fundamentals of bonsai-making. Topics covered choosing the suitable tree species, using the essential tools and materials, proper potting and repotting, watering and fertilization, growth control, as well as styling and shaping techniques. They also delved into pest and disease control, soil composition, and effective drainage.

As part of the event, 27 mini garden tool sets were distributed to the participants. Each set included a transplanter trowel, standard trowel, spray bottle, pruning shears, and hand rake.

Further, the activity underscores the collaboration between the agency and the Philippine Army to support and engage with local communities through meaningful programs that encourage personal development and environmental consciousness.# (MAC)
